A Philosophical Foundation for Multimedia Design in Gerontology and Geriatrics CHAPTER 10 A Philosophical Foundation for Multimedia Design in Gerontology and Geriatrics Donna M. Weinreich and Jennifer Mendez Multimedia teaching and learning approaches in gerontology and geriat- rics were examined through an extensive literature review and Internet search, and comparison with guidelines developed by the Association for Gerontology in Higher Education. Systematic research investigating sci- entifi c foundations for multimedia design in gerontology and geriatrics technology-based or technology-enhanced teaching strategies were not found. The seven principles of good practice, the psychological principles of learner-centered teaching, and Mayer’s principles of multimedia design are described as a point of convergence among learner, instructor, and learning environment. This point of convergence is suggested as a starting point for research in the effi cacy of multimedia design in gerontology and geriatrics.
