Dore Chris Roberts Sarah Wright Received: 16 September 2016 / Accepted: 26 October 2016 / Published online: 4 November 2016 Springer Science+Business Media Dordrecht 2016 Today’s healthcare professionals require expertise in clinical knowledge and skills, as well as communication, collaboration, advocacy, leadership, scholarship, and professionalism (Frank and Danoff 2007; Kirch 2012; Witzburg and Sondheimer 2013; O’Connell et al. 2014). Prideaux et al. (2011) identified key principles applied to ‘assessment for selection,’ which are seen throughout the articles in this special edition. The ‘pieces’ of what con- stitutes a ‘good’ healthcare professional are currently assessed in a range of differing ways during selection into education and training. In the United Kingdom, the Medical Schools Council report suggests selection frameworks and models broadly address three consid- erations (skills, values and attributes) with similar frameworks existing in other countries such as the CanMEDS framework in Canada (Selecting for Excellence Executive Group 2014; Frank and Danoff 2007). In doing, so selection committees should ensure the fairest and most transparent admissions processes that select the best possible candidates, from all
