All the forms of sociality – including casual social interaction, persistent intimate association, and social contri- bution – are, generally speaking, of irreplaceable value to us, and we have claims of justice that the state support these goods. While I agree with Brownlee on many points, in this essay I will build on a response I’ve made to Brownlee’s arguments elsewhere. While sociality provides many non- substitutable goods, it is also, for many, a realm of debilitating bads and wrongs which are too often ignored and under-theorized. To the extent that Brownlee’s argu- ments do not grapple with the extent of social behaviors and relationships which are harassing, abusive, bullying, and otherwise deeply objectionable, her theory of what we owe to each other as social beings contains a sizable lacuna. But while this essay will raise points of disagreement with Brownlee, these should not http://www.deepdyve.com/assets/images/DeepDyve-Logo-lg.png Criminal Law and Philosophy Springer Journals
