V. Shulei- kin, the first stationary marine hydrophysical station in the world was founded in the village of Katsiveli (Crimea) on the Black-Sea coast. The main aim of its creation was to perform systematic investigations of various processes and phenomena ob- served in the coastal zone of the sea. The Marine Hydrophysical Institute of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR was founded on the basis of the Black-Sea Hydrophysical Station and the Marine Hydrophysical Laboratory (formerly a department of the Institute of Theoretical Geophysics) in 1948 in Moscow. Academician V. V. Shuleikin, an outstanding sci- entist in the field of oceanography, became its director-organizer and informal scien- tific leader. First scientific achievements of the Marine Hydrophysical Institute were con- nected with the name ol ~ V. V. Shuleikin.
