However, studying public opinions on the Chinese death penalty faces a different but equally unique challenge—it is unclear to what extent public opinions play a role in policy-making in China. To what end, then, do we read about Chinese populism on topic of the death penalty? In the book, Chinese Netizens’ Opinions on Death Sentences: An Empirical Examination, authors Liang and Liu provide convinc- ing accounts that netizens, as a characteristic and substantial group of the Chinese pub- lic, display a significant amount of variation regarding perspectives on the subject. More importantly, these voices could contribute to the eventual outcome of individual court deci- sions.
