Preface

Preface Journal of Autism and Developmental Disorders, Vol. 27, No. 1, 1997 Editorial This issue of the Journal of Autism and Developmental Disorders pro- vides an interesting and diverse series of papers. Keel, Mesibov, and Woods provide a very helpful summary of the supported employment program pro- vided by Division TEACCH. Supported employment has increasingly en- abled individuals with autism and similar handicaps to become productive members of the work force. This effort has been stimulated both at the Federal and local levels. Division TEACCH has utilized several different models of supported employment although each of these models has in common the attempt to utilize individual areas of strength in employment planning. The impressive retention rate of the program reflects the care in planning an appropriate array of support services. Hodapp, Dykens, and Masino examine aspects of stress support in families with children with the Prader-Willi syndrome. This paper reflects the increased concern of research with aspects of stress and coping in fami- lies with children with special needs. As noted in the paper, family stress was less related to the child's age, cognitive ability, and degree of the obe- sity frequently associated with this condition and more strongly related http://www.deepdyve.com/assets/images/DeepDyve-Logo-lg.png Journal of Autism and Developmental Disorders Springer Journals
