Possibility of higher order critical fields in superconducting rings

Possibility of higher order critical fields in superconducting rings The behavior of a small superconducting ring or hollow cylinder in an axial magnetic field is studied using the nonlinear Ginzburg-Landau equations. We find that, if the radius of the cylinder is smaller than half the superconducting coherence length ξ(T), a periodic alternation between the superconducting and the normal state occurs as the magnetic field is increased. This defines higher order critical magnetic fields for vanishing and reentrant superconductivity. http://www.deepdyve.com/assets/images/DeepDyve-Logo-lg.png Journal of Low Temperature Physics Springer Journals

Abstract

The behavior of a small superconducting ring or hollow cylinder in an axial magnetic field is studied using the nonlinear Ginzburg-Landau equations. We find that, if the radius of the cylinder is smaller than half the superconducting coherence length ξ(T), a periodic alternation between the superconducting and the normal state occurs as the magnetic field is increased. This defines higher order critical magnetic fields for vanishing and reentrant superconductivity.
