Egorov, and D. A. Shkarovskii UDC 621.039.58'68 One of the promising directions for increasing nuclear-reactor safety is the development of passive systems for emergency reactor shielding. When such a system is installed the reactor acquires an additional negative feedback on reactivity. This feedback is triggered when the main operating parameters (temperature, coolant flow rate, power) exceed admissible values. Such systems are making k possible to develop nuclear reactors which are internally stable against technical systems failures and errors by personnel. Passive emergency shielding systems also make it possible to control of off-design accidents, i.e., they trigger actions which prevent the development of a design accident into an off-design accident and decrease the consequences of off-design accidents. A quantitative illustration of the role of passive emergency shielding systems is provided, for example, by the results obtained in [1], where it is shown thatthe probability for the development of serious accidents for a fast reactor DFBR decreases from 8.2-10 -8 to 9.4-I0-1o l/(reactor-yr) when such systems are introduced.
