[This chapter provides a brief overview of the meanings of compassion during the interwar period in order to create a critical frame for examining how the attributes of neorealist representations of compassion may be differentiated. It examines Carlo Bernari’s Tre operai (Three Factory Workers, 1934), which exemplifies the “new realism” of the interwar years, and Emil Ludwig’s Colloqui con Mussolini (Interviews with Mussolini), where the Duce argues that human suffering is positive, since it prompts revolution and virtue.]
