[The complexities of World War II were extremely exposed in Yugoslavia: it manifested in several layers of conflict. Due to this complexity, the roles of many participants have not been adequately described or understood. Many historiographical works have left lacunae, especially when debating actions of units and individuals who were defeated. This chapter will explain the main historical elements of the existence of the Handzar Division, a military formation made up mainly of Bosnian Muslims and set up by Heinrich Himmler. As well as committing atrocities, it staged the only mutiny within the Nazi German SS structure. During the insurgency, the first town in France was liberated from Nazis, albeit very briefly.]
