Abstract

The only fertile specimen of the red algal genus Palmaria (Palmariales, Palmariaceae) was found at the North Kuril Islands (Atlasov Island). The specimen bore spermatangia, and its morphological and anatomical examination showed that it differed from the all currently known species of the genus and belonged to a new species; the Palmaria integrifolia Selivanova et Zhigadlova, sp. nov was proposed. Its description, illustrations, and comparison with other representatives of the family Palmariceae inhabiting waters at the Pacific coast of Russia are given in the article. The genus Palmaria has been shown to have seven species in this area, including the new one.
