Living in a World Heritage Site: Fez [This chapter gives an overview of the history of Fez and describes three major changes that have occurred since 1957. Firstly, Fassi elites left the medina; their houses were occupied by rural migrants, who are accused of causing the material degradation of the medina. This negative image, however, has not prevented Westerners from settling there. Secondly, cultural heritage policies emerged in Morocco during the French Protectorate, with the creation of laws and institutions. The main change occurred in 1981 with the World Heritage nomination. Thirdly, tourism development started in Fez in the late 1990s with the development of tourist accommodation and the establishment of low-cost direct flights. Given these changes, one may encounter various forms of heritage in the Fez medina.] http://www.deepdyve.com/assets/images/DeepDyve-Logo-lg.png
