### Abstract

We study the field of rational differential invariants of the left $$\mathbf {PSL}_{2}\left( \mathbb {R}\right)$$ PSL 2 R -action on the homogeneous space $$\mathbf { Diff(S}^{1})/\mathbf {PSL}_{2}\left( \mathbb {R}\right)$$ Diff ( S 1 ) / PSL 2 R and use them to give an alternative discription of the shape space and fingerprints, introduced by Mumford and Sharon (Int J Comput Vis 70(1):55–75, 2006).
