Influenza virus vaccine: adverse reactions in Denmark
Abstract
Reactions 1077 - 12 Nov 2005 Influenza virus vaccine: adverse reactions in Denmark The Danish Medicines Agency has received 307 reports of suspected adverse reactions associated with the influenza virus vaccine from 1972 to September 2005; of those reports, 86 were serious. The agency says that serious adverse reactions from the vaccine are rare compared to the large proportion of patients who are vaccinated, and that the risk of influenza complications is higher than the risk of serious adverse reactions from the vaccine. According to the Danish Medicines Agency, there have been 14 deaths associated with the influenza virus vaccine, and these deaths were mostly in elderly patients who had chronic heart or lung disorders, or who had suddenly died but their death was not related to the vaccine; furthermore, the agency states that it has not been documented that any of the deaths were due to the vaccine. The agency says that neurological adverse reactions were rare, and the most common adverse reactions included injection site reactions (skin eruptions, redness or swelling) and musculoskeletal pain. According to the agency, there were 3.2 million doses of Influvacc and 1.7 million doses of Vaxigrip administered between 1993–2005 and 1989–2005, respectively. The agency also says that, in 2004, there was an increase in the number of adverse reaction reports due to media coverage of the risk of adverse reactions related to the influenza virus vaccine.
