Moissan made an outstanding con- tribution to the development of quite a number of branches of applied chemistry in the late XIX3 early XX century. He obtained fluorine in free state for the first time, studied a number of its compounds, designed an electric arc furnace (having thereby laid the foundation of high-temperature chemistry), syn- thesized a great number of high-melting compounds, and isolated boron and other elements by reducing their oxides. Ferdinand Frederic Henri Moissan was born on September 28, 1852, in Paris; his father was a minor official at the Eastern Railroad Company. In 1864, his family moved to a small town Meaux in northern France, Department of Seine-et-Marne, where Henri entered a municipal college. The scientist-to-be re- vealed strong interest in mathematics and natural sciences, especially chemistry.
