The first International 3D-Forum Lindau in March 2002 was attended by just 45 participants, but by May 2019 it had grown to 270—not only because the event had become bet- ter known, but also because the topic of 3D city models and everything that goes with them is no longer just a topic for exotics, but has found its way into broad practice. I believe that in this special issue, we have prepared a good mixture of contributions from science, administration, municipalities and state authorities. These articles show very nicely how the topic of 3D city models has developed in DACH (Deutschland/Germany, Austria and Switzerland/CH) and where the trend is going.
