Foucault and the Modern InternationalThe Microphysics of Power Redux

Foucault and the Modern International: The Microphysics of Power Redux [This chapter argues for revisiting Foucault’s microphysics of power, and reconnecting this theme to the analysis of particular issues within world politics. A concern with microphysics can serve as a counter-weight to the tendency in recent post-Foucauldian scholarship to emphasize indirect forms of power while overlooking the presence of relations of force, violence and struggle. It can also give the body a more prominent place in international relations and security studies. The chapter draws on the study of deportation and migration control to develop these arguments. It calls not for a general re-adoption of the microphysics so much as attunement to contexts where it does provide effective and appropriate tools. The conclusion observes that the microphysics of power is not exhausted by the theme of discipline. If anything the powers that invest deportation are suggestive of a microphysics of police.] http://www.deepdyve.com/assets/images/DeepDyve-Logo-lg.png

Abstract

[This chapter argues for revisiting Foucault’s microphysics of power, and reconnecting this theme to the analysis of particular issues within world politics. If anything the powers that invest deportation are suggestive of a microphysics of police.]
