The purpose of regenerating acids and used etching solutions is to return as much of the acid(s) initially added as possible to the etching process. A significant fraction of the unused acid (which makes up from a quarter to a third of the volume of acid initially added to the primary etching bath) can be regenerated. Full regeneration is also possible; in practice, however, this is only used for etching baths containing hydrochloric acid.
