[Having complied with many of his family’s expectations by becoming a good son, attending university, and growing self-sufficient, the author has developed a strong bond with his father. Cadena speaks of his love and respect for his father and of how much he has benefited from his father’s regard and mentorship. When the author departs from his family home in Tijuana to reside in San Diego, he tells his father of his gay sexuality. But Cadena is surprised to find his father does not really know him or understand his commitment to self and identity. In time, however, the father reaches out to his son and finds new ways of being with him that no longer privilege gender binaries or homophobically insensitive ways of being.]
