Mit der Auffindung des Penicillins durch A. FLEI~IIN~ [1] wurde der Arzneimittelforschung ein neues Arbeitsgebiet ersehlossen, das w~hrend der letzten 10 Jahre eine tiberragende Bedeutung gewann. Die intensive Forschungsarbeit, die in der ganzen Welt mit einem riesigen Einsatz aufgenommen wurde, um weitere Antibiotica aufzufinden, hat bis zum heutigen Tage zur Iso]ierung yon nahezu 400 mehr oder weniger genau besehriebenen Antibiotica geffihrt, yon denen allerdings nut etwa ein Dutzend zur therapeutischen Anwendung gekommen ist. Angesiehts dieser Zahlen kSnnte die berechtigte Frage gestellt werden, warum man fiberhaupt noch nach neuen antibiotischen Substanzen sucht. I)affir lassen sich verschiedene Griinde anffihren: Einmal gibt es im Wirkungsbereich der bisher bekannten Antibiotica noch Liicken, so lassen sich beispielsweise Proteus- oder PyocyaneaInfektionen bei Anwendung vertr~iglicher Konzentrationen mit keinem der gebr~uchlichen Antibiotica sicher beherrschen. Auch gegen Pilzinfektionen, z. B. Soor, sowie Aktinomykose, und gegen die eehten Viren fehlt es noch immer an geeigneten Pri~paraten. Weiterhin m~cht sich beim Gebrauch der bekannten Antibiotica verh~ltnism~Gig hi~ufig das Auftreten resistenter
