Epov October 17, 2010 Received November 8, 2010 DOI: 10.1134/S1028334X11040179 An ungrounded horizontal loop used for the exci tation of induction transitients in the earth is one of the main elements used in the system for pulse induc tive electrical prospecting. When the current is switched off in the loop, an eddy electric field appears in the space surrounding the loop, which induces eddy currents in the earth. After this, the secondary mag netic field excited by these currents is measured. It is usually assumed in the theory that the current and correspondingly the primary field are switched off on instantaneously. However, a real loop is inertial, and after it is switched off from a battery or generator, high frequency current oscillations appear in the loop (the so called ringing). The period of these high fre quency oscillations determines the minimum time during which the current can be switched off in the loop.
