Abstract
[To win more money at the local casino, Ranulfo has been creating a saint of himself—an audacious move by any measure. Peter is reminded of Captain Ahab trying to “strike through the mask,” to find out whether a seemingly random, impersonal universe loves him or will destroy him. Later, when commenting on a draft of this chapter, Ranulfo intuitively and immediately agrees with the Ahab comparison, saying, “I’d punch time if I had to…so we’re the same.” Given Ranulfo’s resemblance to Ahab and a customer going through troubles at the casino, Peter gets worried about Ranulfo.]
