J Autism Dev Disord (2011) 41:1436–1438 DOI 10.1007/s10803-011-1303-0 LETTER TO THE EDITOR Roseann Schaaf • Erna Imperatore Blanche Published online: 11 June 2011 Ó Springer Science+Business Media, LLC 2011 Dear Editor, In a recently published article (Devlin et al. 2010), the authors report on an effectiveness study comparing behavioral intervention to sensory integration in the treatment of challenging behaviors in four children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). Clearly, the authors have a sophisticated understanding of the intricacies of behavioral intervention and its systematic application in the evaluation and treatment of older children with ASDs, however, this stands in stark contrast to that used to describe the sensory integration approach. They misrepresent the treatment they use calling it ‘‘sensory integration therapy,’’ when in fact, the approach they use is not at all in keeping with the principles and practices of sensory integration (Ayres, 1979; Schaaf et al. 2009; May-Benson and Koomar, 2010). This misapplication is likely due their use of outdated literature which is often cited inaccurately and is often not from peer reviewed sources. As a result, their study is fraught with misapplications and inaccuracies, and thus, is misleading to the readers. We focus our comments on 3
