DOI 10.1007/s10600-018-2417-9 Chemistry of Natural Compounds, Vol. 54, No. 3, May, 2018 CHEMICAL COMPOSITION AND ANTIOXIDANT ACTIVITY OF THE ESSENTIAL OIL OF Plectranthus ‘Mona Lavender’ Peng-Xiang Lai,* Cheng-lei Wang, and Lu Ma Plectranthus ‘Mona Lavender’ is a popular garden plant but was only recently bred by Roger Jacques from two species of Plectranthus in Cape Town, South Africa. It is a vigorous, upright, rounded, bushy perennial that typically grows to 75 cm tall. Plectranthus ‘Mona Lavender’ is used for its repellent effect on mosquitoes. The essential oil composition of Plectranthus ‘Mona Lavender’ has not been previously investigated. Herein we report for the first time the chemical composition of the essential oil from the fresh aerial parts of Plectranthus ‘Mona Lavender ’ and evaluate its antioxidant activity by the 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) radical scavenging assay. The results from a chemical analysis of the essential oil of Plectranthus ‘Mona Lavender’ are shown in Table 1. Sixty-one compounds, which represent 97.08% of the essential oil, were identified. The main constituents of the oil of Plectranthus ‘Mona Lavender’ were humulene (14.26%), humulene 1,2-epoxide (9.26%), chloropyrifos (7.45%), -cadinol (7.10%), and sclareol (4.85%).
