Kursanov: A Classic Figure in Plant Physiology cate the November issue of the journal to this occasion. However, we consider the entire year 2002 worthy of celebration and will begin the celebration with this issue. Kursanov was born at the beginning of the 20th cen- tury. Guided by the profound knowledge of his prede- cessors, he was capable of thoroughly comprehending issues and generalizing facts that seemed separate. His unique scientific insight, original concepts, and high level of investigation enabled Kursanov to expand many areas of plant physiology, and this not only in Russia. It would be impossible to name all countries where he has had an influence. Kursanov’s number one priority in scientific research was metabolite transport over the plant as an integral basis for the vital activities of the whole organism. Kursanov and coworkers focused on structural bases and mechanisms of intrac- ellular, intercellular, and long-distance transport of sub- stances.
