Petroanalysis 87 -- Developments in Analytical Chemistry in the Petroleum Industry by G. B. Crump John Wiley & Sons, Chichester UK, 1988, X + 290 pp. ISBN 0-471-91946-2, Price: s 50.00 This book contains most of the papers given at the third symposium on advances in analysis in the petroleum industry (the first was in 1974 and the second in 1981). Crude oil and its products present the analyst w i t h problems which are perhaps only exceded in difficulty by the analysis of high molecular weight biochemical mixtures. Indeed, if one believes in the biogenic origins of oil, as the majority of scientists do, then there is a considerable overlap between the t w o fields. Because of the difficult problems encountered, petroleum analysts are frequently in the f o r e f r o n t of technique development (historically the development of IR and mass spectroscopv and GC owe much to petroleum analysts) and a meeting to discuss advances in petroleum analysis should, therefore, cover most fields of analytical chemistry. The papers in this book do, indeed, cover a wide range of modern analytical techniques but the book cannot be said to give an
