Women for Hire: Prostitution and Sexuality in France after 1850
[Marshal MacMahon’s assumption of power brought to a head the monarchist challenge to the Republic. This political challenge was intertwined with personal challenges for Gambetta and Léon. The couple had declared their love, but whether a relationship between a courtesan and her protector could evolve into something more enduring was far from certain. It would break the social codes that excluded courtesans from polite society and, given Léon’s earlier links to the Empire, pose political dangers as well. Increasingly, too, family problems disrupted Léon’s relationship with Gambetta. The political collaboration between the couple enlivened, and was enlivened by, the intimate ties that bound them. But both their political and personal aspirations advanced uncertainly, and their rising and falling hopes on both counts were reflected in their letters.]
