On Being Authentic
[Most of us live a divided life: ideas apart from feelings, theories apart from actions, and people apart from each other and apart from ‘nature’. Following Parker Palmer, this chapter seeks to live divided-no-more. Dualism, of the kind attributed to Descartes, came to dominate modern philosophy. In schools, mind-body dualism leads them to be seen as intellectual places where bodies are annoying inconveniences, and physically engaging subjects looked down upon as not ‘proper’ or ‘academic’. Schools may also promote ‘us’ and ‘them’ dualisms, such as those based on nationality, religion, or gender. Breaking down dualism can be achieved within classrooms (through dialogue), within the curriculum, and within the organisation of schooling. Here, a curriculum for overcoming dualism—a curriculum for one—is begun.]
