[On December 29, 2014, Cuban artist Tania Bruguera attempted to stage her performance Tatlin Whisper #6 in the iconic Plaza de la Revolución in Havana. It consisted of a stage on which volunteers from the audience would be given one minute to speak at the microphone about the new US-Cuba relationship. Bruguera had successfully put on a similar performance at the 2009 Havana Biennial, which caused quite a stir because of the intervention of internationally famous Cuban blogger Yoani Sánchez and other Cuban activists. This second performance in 2014, as the hashtag #YoTambiénExijo expressed, sought to provide “ordinary Cubans” on the island with an opportunity to make their own demands before the prospect of renewed US-Cuba relations. According to Bruguera, her intention was to address the discrepancy between the media’s ample coverage of the respective presidents’ comments on the new regulations versus the silence over the reactions of those to whom the changes might matter the most.]
