[The success of Starling’s research from 1890 to 1896 did not seem to make much of an impression on Guy’s Hospital. He had to re-apply annually for his poorly paid job and to be assessed by the group of clinicians who made up the Staff Committee (as revealed by the Guy’s Hospital minutes, 1890–99). The finances of Guy’s were remarkable, though they were probably characteristic of teaching hospitals at the time; there was a hospital fund, guarded by an all-powerful Treasurer (Mr. Lushington) and salaries were made in units (“shares”) of this fund. Salaries always had to have Mr. Lushington’s approval. In 1890 a share was worth about a hundred pounds, with this value falling steadily throughout the 1890s. So the economy of Guy’s had its own inflation.]
