In many cases, descriptive, scientific writing contributes information to magazines, newspapers, and other media forms often accessed by the public. For example, descriptive writing might explain the life cycle of a penguin, list all the species present in a biological survey, or catalogue the sequence of geological formations of rock strata found at the Grand Canyon. Descriptive writing is useful for explaining what exists at a point in time, and provides en- tertainment, information, education, and promotes awareness.
