CHAPTER 2 2.1 DESCRIPTIVE OR ANALYTICAL WRITING? Analytical writing incorporates information to answer specific questions; achieve goals, test hy - potheses, decide new approaches, identify relevant information, and explain the importance of the new ideas. The process of analytical writing uses conventions and formats that help readers, who often must look at many documents and then form ideas for their own writing. Scientific writing can be descriptive rather than analytical, and descriptive, scientific writ - ing is a vital form of communication. In many cases, descriptive, scientific writing contributes information to magazines, newspapers, and other media forms often accessed by the public. For example, descriptive writing might explain the life cycle of a penguin, list all the species present in a biological survey, or catalogue the sequence of geological formations of rock strata found at the Grand Canyon. Descriptive writing is useful for explaining what exists at a point in time, and provides en- tertainment, information, education, and promotes awareness. The stage is often set for descriptive, scientific writing with statements such as the following. 1. “The purpose of this article is to characterize the flora of the Mojave Desert.” 2. “This article reviews the literature on space shuttle
