Once deemed stable after the operative procedure, the VAD patient is escorted to the intensive care unit (ICU) for immediate postoperative recovery and management. Upon recovery from the surgical procedure, LVAD patients are often transferred to a less acute level of care within the hospital and subsequently discharged to home or rehab facilities. Intensive care recovery is focused on management of surgical complications including bleeding, ventilator management, and hemodynamic stability whereas post ICU recovery is intended for device teaching, chronic comorbidity management, and physical therapy.
