[Mankind has always dealt with collections of things, and in connection especially with logics, mathematics and philosophy the theories of collections have required explicit attention. Two theories have prevailed. From antiquity part-whole theories emerged in which, say, the collection of Kenyan women is a part (maybe empty, maybe the whole) of the collections of Kenyans and of women. I reserve “classes” to name this type of collection, to which the name “mereology” is often attached.]
