A Contrived Countryside: Uneven Demand: Depopulation, Repopulation and Housing Pressure [Common portrayals of rural England up to the last quarter of the twentieth-century paint a picture of rural decline; of job losses, depopulation and outmigration. Moreover, rural areas increasingly received urban interest from those seeking recreational bolt-holes, which further squeezed the availability of homes for local residents. Exploring efforts to enhance accommodation supply, this chapter shows how rural districts were badly served by national slum clearance drives, which proceeded with stipulations detrimental to rural action; resulting in depressed rural building, as in the 1930s.
