phenomena in our world is that of equilibrating systems: parts of the universe that settle into one of a spectrum of equilibrium states once certain boundary conditions are imposed. There are, in fact, many equilibrating systems with discrete spectra, for example the quantum states of molecules. Given the definiteness of these systems, we might take the operation of equilibrating as an effective one.
