The Polish bookmarket

Lukasz Golebiewski have been developing p olish publishing and bookselling industriesearly 1990s changes werevery dynamically over the past ten years. In the extremely rapid as a great number of new publishing houses were established in a very short period of time, and, on the other hand, the state-owned distribution system completely broke down. Since 1994, not only a constant increase in book sales has been noted but also a distinctly defined group of leading firms in this sector. These changes mostly concern the publishing industry, since bookselling presently is undergoing further radical changes, it is still a part of the economy which has not been developed or exploited completely. Although quite recently, already in 1994 a group of publishing firms could boast of their survival and establish a stability in the market. However, it was only last year when changes in the distribution sector began. Obviously, the book distribution system established by communistic authorities had collapsed in the early 1990s. A state-owned enterprise "Dom Ksiazki" that in 1988 owned approximately 2,140 bookstores all over the country began to crumble in 1989. Between 1989 and 1991 most of the bookstores were taken over by ex-employees and new employee-owned companies
