November 2012 PANEL A: Mining and Minerals Mineral supply for unconventional deposits Höfler, G., Austrian Armed Forces A/EU: "The role of Armed Forces in support of minerals policy" Engl.: Modern society is based on a high demand for raw materials, which often only can be obtained from areas outside of Austria or even outside of Europe. In many cases, these areas are affected by political and social crises and therefore need the deployment of multinational forces in order to ensure stability, especially for the local population. The European Security Strategy has identified Europe's energy dependence as a big challenge: we can expect that the imports of natural oil and gas will have increased from currently 50 to 70 % by the year 2030. Concerning other natural resources, except those used for construction works, Austria's dependence on imports is about 80 %, for rare earths it is 100 %. In the future, a sustaining supply of raw materials will be of increasing importance. Against the background of the current and future crisis hotspots,
