Temkin, Owsei. On Second Thought And Other Essays in the History of Medicine and Science. Baltimore and London: Johns Hopkins University Press, 2002. 272 pp. $48.00 (hardcover). On Second Thought is a collection of 16 essays published over the course of more than 50 years, by Owsei Temkin (1902­2002), one of the leading medical historians of his generation. Divided into four sections ­ Ethics in Medicine, The History of Science, The History of Therapy and Nutrition, and A Miscellany ­ the book is a sequel to Temkin's earlier collection, The Double Face of Janus (1977). The volume can be read in part as an attempt to reassess his earlier work. As the title suggests, Temkin has ``second thoughts'' about some of his earlier conclusions, and ``second thoughts'' about the views of colleagues and friends who shaped his earlier thinking. But the book can also be read as a record of his attempts to defend the field of medical history against incursions from other disciplines and fields.
