INTRODUCTION Two billion people live without access to p ower in r ural areas of developing countries. For th ese people the lack of a minimal el ectricity supply for li ght, r efrigeration, w ater pumping an d mini in dustries is a basic issue in t heir q uality of l ife a nd a reason to migrate t o t he cities. In ad dition in m any rural ar eas in t hese countries, older d iesel generators are often t he only so urce of e lectricity supporting th e local electrical grid system. These diesels are often u nreliable and almost always expensive to o perate, both in te rms of th e real cost of o peration as well as the hidden costs engendered by the hard f oreign cu rrency value of th e fuel.
