INTRODUCTION The es teem of c oal as an energy medium, e specially for p ower generation, has significantly grown internationally since the middle o f the year 2000. Decisive for this were the problems in t he American power supply and the moderate price increase of coal compared with o il a nd gas. This t opical trend f its in w ith t he generally positive evaluation of t he future de velopment of c oal demand as expressed in p opular forecasts, while the growing h unger fo r en ergy of th e developing and threshold countries is especially cited as a reason. At the same time, t he discussion of t he possible effects of t he growing en ergy consumption on the world cl imate has intensified noticeably, even though th e interrelationship between the CO concentration and the heating up of t he atmosphere of t he earth is not sc ientifically proven b eyond any doubt.
