A lovely word, like sleep, like mother's good- night kiss in the dark or Christmas Eve. You cherish peace. Some nights, when the news is particularly terrifying, with pictures of men sprawled in the dust of some tiny country rattling their weapons like madmen, you ache for peace, despair of the future of humanity - then flick off the set and forget it all. You're too busy. The weary fallout of human misfortune that endlessly stumbles through your office (you're a social worker; so am I) absorbs all your emotional energy. Forget the Superpowers, the countries in conflict; you see a different strain of conflict - battered wives, assaulted citizens, beaten children, suicidal youths, frightened depressed confused minds, your own anxieties, the doubts within your heart.
