That trajec- tory starts with a reasonable suspicion of the role that experience can or should play in theologizing but ends by attempting to deny any meaningful place for experience, not only in producing theology but in Christian life and practice altogether. Zahl’s helpful and convincing narration of this development is central to a core component of his overall project: to argue that while the concerns that animate theologians who stand in this line are quite legitimate and worth continuing to take seriously, the attempt to totally eliminate experience from theologizing is both an unnecessary overcorrection to
