INTRODUCTION The ch allenge to o ffer pr oducts that makes hydroelectric p ower generation profitable for th e operators drives the development efforts o f th e suppliers. Although co nditions around t he world d iffer s ignificantly, there are some major i tems that always have to be addressed. These items are Cost Efficiency Reliability O&M costs Environmental friendliness In order to meet these challenges, ALSTOM Power is developing the Powerformer technology for b oth h ydro- an d turbo g enerating applications. By offering in herently higher eff iciency as well as improvements in al l other f ields mentioned above, this technology has the potential to c ontribute t o i mproved p rofitability f or h ydropower investment for th e benefit o f t he whole industry. P owerformer te chnology, as first demonstrated in th e Porjus h ydro p ower plant in n orthern S weden, has now entered the mature st ate in w hich practical experience from f ull si ze applications validates the concept.
