Emile Durkheim SOCIOLOGY'S NEGLECTED HISTORY I've read that many children have less than harmonious relationships with their parents--especially when the kids are in their teen years. Many teenagers reject their parents' ideas as, among other things, not applicable to the real world. But as the children mature they often find those ideas to be rather sensible. It is hard to date exactly the age of sociology vis-a-vis other disciplines, but surely we are just coming out of our teen years if we think of Saint-Simon, Comte, Durkheim, Tonnies and that gang as our parents. Hence, it is not all that shocking that we are finding our founders' ideas about the use of sociologv increasingly acceptable. Remember that most of our founders expected to use sociology as they developed sociology's theoretic and methodological foundations. Comte wanted sociologist-priests to guide society. Durkheim wrote that it was "vain and sterile ... to stand by
