The papers of the invited speakers in the plenary sessions were gathered for inclusion in this volume of proceedings. An impressive collection of very current thoughts by outstanding researchers and practitioners in the field of language disorders is the result. The volume is rather loosely divided into six main areas, with a listing of all the contributors to the programmes in the back. The first section, entitled 'The Causes of Language Disorders', includes four very up-to-date papers on neurobiological and cognitive bases for language disorders. The speakers make valiant attempts to supplement the vague term LANGUAGE DISORDERS and then debate the existence of discrete syndromes of language impairment.
