This book is a collage of ideas which deals with the critical issues thwarting urban development in India. Urbanization has resulted in issues, such as defining the urban boundaries, resource distribution, structural adjustments and access to civic amenities, which need to be addressed frontally as urbanization beyond factsheets is often characterized by dynamism, complexity and unevenness. The book focuses on five themes: defining the urban; conditions generating the work, living and (in)security; the nature of contemporary Indian cities; the dilemmas organizing urban policy, planning and governance; and ecology, environment and well-being. The first theme focuses on the debate of defining the urban. The necessity of redefining the urban arises from the fact presented in the Census 2011 data. While National Sample Survey Office (NSSO) suggests declining male migration towards the city, the population census notes a growth in census towns. Kundu explains this paradox (oxymoron) in the concept of ‘rurbanization’ which implies settle- ment with urban (demographic) characteristics http://www.deepdyve.com/assets/images/DeepDyve-Logo-lg.png Environment and Urbanization ASIA SAGE
