Auckland Park, South Africa: Jacana Media, 2017. P. 214: ISBN Inside Apartheid’s Prison gives a gritty and courageous account of Raymond Suttner’s involve- ment in the anti-apartheid movement in South Africa, his arrest, subsequent torture, and ongoing imprisonment. Originally penned in 2001, the book opens with an introduction to the new edition, enriched with the knowledge of hindsight. Suttner anchors the text on an early experience (at the age of 14 years) of racism that illustrated his need to ensure that a coloured man was treated equi- tably by the police. Suttner describes his subjectivity in relation to oppressed black South Africans, ‘. . .I acted on the basis of how I sensed I stood in relation to the person who was or potentially stood to be victimised’ (p. xi–xii). Suttner’s book outlines the move from a privileged liberal white space to spaces at the coalface of oppressed freedom fighters ‘as much as this is possible for a white South African’ (p. xii).
