Pfatteicher (1935–2021), is the concluding installment in his four-part study of the liturgy, the first three volumes of which are The School of the Church: Worship and Christian Formation (1995), Liturgical Spirituality (1997), and Journey into the Heart of God: Living the Liturgical Year (2013). In this present work, Pfatteicher aims “to show how classic hymns of the Church provide a remarkably com- plete course in theology, systematic and practical, and do it in a pleasing and memorable way” (p. xviii). By “classic hymn,” Pfatteicher means the historic repertoire of hymns that includes ancient and medieval hymns, Lutheran hymns, a sprinkling of Eastern Orthodox sources, and the vast body of English-language hymns written before the mid- twentieth century.
