Earthscan, 2008 Urban areas in Africa, Asia and Latin America are central to the demographic, economic and environmental challenges of the 21st century. Considering that urban growth in these regions is likely to contribute to nearly 80 per cent of global urban population growth by 2030, urban transformation in cities in these regions is bound to have local and global significance. Decisions taken on development of these urban areas will either lead to greater sustainable development, or intensify the already critical poverty and environmental challenges. This book reflects on several key elements contributing to the overall urbanism in the 21st century, with the aim of getting a better understanding of some of the actions and challenges that could make the urbanization process more beneficial towards overall human development.
