College Preparation for African American Students: Gaps in the High School Educational Experience.
The counseling profession has seen an increase in research exploring counseloreducators’ professional identity development. Leadership skills are noted in theCouncil for Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Programsstandards as an important part of a school counselor’s identity, but scholarshave paid less attention to leadership identity development for counseloreducators. This lack of emphasis in the literature is even more evident whenconsidering the leadership development of racial and ethnic minority counseloreducators in school counseling programs. This article explores and critiquesnoted leadership approaches and provides firsthand accounts of two Black malecounselor educators’ experiences leading school counseling programs.
